San Fruttuoso from Portofino: by Boat or on Foot?

A bay with no road

San Fruttuoso is a small inlet on the far side of the Portofino headland, in the comune of Camogli. A pebble beach, a watchtower and the Abbey of San Fruttuoso fill the head of the bay. The FAI, the Italian heritage trust, has run the abbey since 1983.

No car can reach it. That is why it feels the way it does, and why you need a plan to get there and back. Everything about the bay, from the abbey's rooms to the steps, is on San Fruttuoso and its bay.

The two ways in, side by side

The case for the boat

The public ferry is the easy answer. From Portofino it costs €20 return, and from Santa Margherita €24 return, with a stop in Portofino allowed. From Rapallo it is €27. The FAI says only the Camogli boat runs all year; the rest are seasonal. The full fare table is on getting to Portofino.

A boat trip is the other choice, and here you need to read the stops. Some boats anchor in the bay for a swim and never land. The small-group boat from Portofino harbour spends about 30 minutes in the bay, at $103 a person plus €10 fuel in cash. Some private boats land you on request. The abbey's ticket is never in the fare.

The case for the path

The trail from Portofino crosses the south side of the park through Mediterranean scrub. The park's own guided hike on this route was rated medium and took two and a half hours. It is a real walk, not a stroll along the sea.

Many walkers go one way on foot and take the ferry back. Paths close after storms and slides: in April 2026 Camogli extended an order closing the path at Punta Chiappa. Inside the abbey

The church was founded in the eighth century and rebuilt as a Benedictine monastery in the tenth. The Doria family's tombs from the 13th and 14th centuries are inside. In 1551 Pope Julius III gave the patronage to Admiral Andrea Doria, and the Doria heirs built the tower in 1562.

The abbey sits on three levels joined by stairs. From the jetty you climb a flight of steps, go down another, cross the beach and climb three more. The FAI calls it difficult for visitors with reduced mobility.

The statue under the bay

Off the bay, the Christ of the Abyss stands about 17 metres down. The bronze figure was placed there in August 1954, near where the diver Dario Gonzatti died in 1947. Divers see it up close; from a boat you are crossing the water above it.

The marine protected area sets rules on diving and anchoring round the promontory. Go with a dive centre that works inside it.

The abbey's prices and hours

An adult ticket is €10. Ages 6 to 18 pay €5, under-sixes go free, and a family ticket for two adults and their children is €26. Last entry is 45 minutes before closing. How the season shifts the rest of the day is on the best time to visit Portofino.

Staying after the last boat

Once the last boat leaves, the bay empties. The FAI rents a small residence in the hamlet that sleeps three, with a kitchen, a double bed, a sofa bed, a terrace and a garden. There are no shops or services once the boats stop, so bring what you need. Every year on 24 December a mass is said in the abbey church.

For a day visit, pack water, swimwear and shoes with grip. The steps up to the abbey start right by the beach, and the path home is long if you miss the ferry.

Do both: walk over, sail back

The classic day uses both. Walk from Portofino in the morning, before the heat. See the abbey and swim from the beach. Then take the ferry back to Portofino in the afternoon, and check the last boat's time at the pier when you land. The village itself is on the Portofino visitor guide.

• Fit walkers on a cool day: walk over, ferry back.
• Short on time: a boat trip that passes the bay, and skip the abbey.
• Here for the abbey: the ferry, with an hour or more ashore.
