The best time to visit Portofino depends on what you want from the day: the longest opening hours, the calmest sea or the quietest lanes. If you plan a Portofino booking for a set date, this page shows you what each month gives you.
The village never closes. What changes is the rest: the hours of the castle and the abbey, how often the ferries sail, and the sea itself.
These are the long days. The castle opens 10:00 to 21:00 from 1 June to 30 August, and the abbey 10:00 to 17:45. July is the driest month in Chiavari's normals, with rain on about three days.
It is also when the boats are busiest, so book ahead. In July and August, evening ferries run to Portofino and back from Rapallo and Santa Margherita. The kayak's sunset option is, in its own words, the hour when the crowds leave.
September keeps summer's warmth with more rain than August. The abbey shortens its day to 16:45 from 15 September. The marine area's mooring fields at Punta Chiappa and San Fruttuoso closed on 27 September 2026.
In October the castle opens 10:00 to 18:00 and the abbey 10:00 to 15:45. October is the wettest month, so keep a spare day for the boat.
From 1 November to 31 March the castle opens 10:00 to 16:00. The abbey keeps 10:00 to 15:45, and closes on non-holiday Mondays in November, December, January and February. It is closed on 25 December.
On Christmas Eve, the FAI says, a mass is held every year in the abbey church. In December, January and February, days reach about 11 to 12 °C in Chiavari's normals.
The castle opens 10:00 to 19:00, and the abbey 10:00 to 16:45. Rain falls on about seven days a month. This is a good time for the park's trails, before the summer heat.
